[ bleep ] >> that was an air strike that hit gaza early this morning. palestinian tv channel based in gaza says 11 people so far today have died. part of the israeli offensive, taking out the home of a hamas commander. israel defense forces say there was a stockpile of explosives in the house. they also said they blew up palestinian headquarters, and hamas for a second time in two days, hamas aimed a rocket toward one of israel's big cities, the biggest, tel aviv, but the rocket was intercepted. sarah sydnor is live in gaza city. it's 9:00 p.m. there, how are people surviving on this night? it must be at a standstill right now. >> it was very quiet up until seconds before you talked to me. we're hearing booms of air strakes. we have also seen just behind

're watching a special edition of starting point and cnn's live coverage of election day 2012. the two candidates have been talking for about 17 months now and now it's the american people who will have the final say. these are the states with polls that are opening right now. state of delaware, state of florida, state of georgia, illinois, kansas, louisiana, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, missouri, pennsylvania, rhode island, south carolina, tennessee, and washington, d.c. you're looking at a live picture now from wilmington, delaware, where joe biden is expected to vote at any moment. the vice president then will head to chicago to watch the returns with president obama today. mitt romney is not letting up on this election day. he's added two campaign campaign stops today in cleveland, ohio, and in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. there are already legal issues that are plaguing two battleground states. state of florida, where there are more long lines yesterday, and democrats are suing to extend early voting hours, even though those early voting hours legally ended on saturday. then th

our cnn correspondents across israel as well as in gaza right now. earlier in the day, i went to orbkalon where i saw what was going on firsthand on the israeli side of the border. as soon as we got there, the sirens actually started going on. you could see people running towards shelters. i started running after israeli soldiers demanded that all of us -- our cnn crew, myself, we get to a shelter. usually they have about 30 seconds once the sirens go off before there actually is a rocket or missile that reaches the ground. in this particular case, when we were running, we got to a shelter. it was packed with soldiers, with civilians. and then we finally heard that thud. in this particular case, that iron dome, the israeli anti-missile defense shield, which has been financed at least in some measure by the united states, it worked. and the incoming rokts and missiles were destroyed in the air. later we walked outside and saw that plume of smoke showing those missiles, the rockets had been destroyed. earlier in the day at that same school where we had been -- the iron dome didn

media in gaza while there is a cnn correspondent and a bbc correspondent. they are insulting international media because they're preparing for the ground for huge casualties among palestinian among innocent civilians. it can only stop if israel is pressured. >> if this situation continues to escalate, we're looking at the potential here that israel could move into a ground assault. is that something that the people of gaza are ready for? >> if that happens, we will face a disaster and see hundreds of palestinian civilians killed because we're talking about the most populated area in the world. the most densely populated area in the world. 1.6 million people living in less than 140 square miles. this is a very little piece of la land. 150,000 palestinians, including 450 children. this should not be allowed to happen. stop this escalation and not wanting to stop the violence, but also to initiate a process that allows to end occupation and to end the injustice that has prevailed in this place. to end the system of segregation. i always said to the israelis, when we struggle as

now for promised spending cuts that won't materialize later. >> cnn political director mark preston is live from washington this morning. very nice to see you, mark. so the house is back in session today, and so far there are no talks scheduled between top republicans and the president, we understand. >> no, that's true, zoraida. in fact we haven't seen the congressional leadership and president obama meet since november 16th. now there were staff discussions over the thanksgiving holiday. they don't seem to be as productive as some people had hoped, as you said, we are now 35 days until the fiscal cliff. what we do know, though, is that president obama did reach out to house speaker john boehner. he is the republican, the senate majority leader harry reid the democrat over the weekend, perhaps to try to jump-start the talks. as of now, as the house of representatives comes back today, as the senate came back yesterday, we're still very much in limbo on the fiscal cliff. >> here's something else we know. some major republicans have come out and they say that they don't feel bound by

." the news continues next on cnn. >>> hello, everyone. i'm don lemon. as you know, it is the middle of the night along israel's border with gaza, but this war won't pause for nightfall, not with 30,000 israeli troops mobilizing for battle. the air war is bad enough. israelis wait to hear this sound. a warning that a rocket is only seconds away. the israeli defense force is hitting back with technology that hamas could only dream of. this idf video shows a missile hitting the home of an hamas leader. the military says the secondary explosions are proof of explosives stored in the building. hamas is claiming its own trophy. the group's military wing says it has shot down a military f-16 and damaged two other israeli aircraft. israel denies losing any aircraft. egypt is trying to stop this war before it is too late. cairo's intelligence chief is spearheading talks to end the violence. but on the border, peace looks like an unlikely prospect. our senior international correspondent, ben wedeman joins us now between the border between israel and gaza. ben, ground war, are we about to witn

that sean killer. >> roger moore, that's all for us now. >>> from cnn world headquarters in atlanta this is "early start weekend." >>> on the brink of war as fighting escalate between israel and hamas, experts say a lot more bloodshed before that violence stops. >>> battling over benghazi. lawmakers are furious. the president is standing his ground and still no one in custody. all morning we're putting the conflict and players in focus. >>> it's a fight we all wage around this time of year. how to stave off those extra pounds this holiday season. >>> it is saturday, november 1th, good morning, everyone. i'm randi kaye. victor blackwell is on assignment today. we start in the middle east where the fuse is running short on the powder keg in israel. this has become a fairly common sight in gaza this week. meanwhile, militants on the other side have fired nearly 200 rockets into israel. israel is massing troops near the border with gaza. they have 30,000 troops there right now and have called up thousands more reservists to be ready. at least 39 people have died in gaza since the operat

all ten will be honored live on december 2nd at our cnn heroes and all-star tribute hosted by our very own anderson cooper. that's it for me. i'm going to hand it over now to my friend wolf blitzer in "the situation room." >>> don, thanks very much. happening now, fighting between israel and hamas militants gets more explosive with an attack that could help turn the conflict into a full fledged ground war. also, david petraeus emerges from the shadow of the scandal to testify before congress. did he clear up confusion about the attack on the u.s. diplomats in benghazi? and another high-profile republican now running away from mitt romney after he tried to blame his loss on so-called gifts from president obama. james carville and ari fleischer, they are here this hour. we're going to talk about the gop's hand wringing and back stabbing. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> hamas militants -- [ gunfire ] -- there they are. hamas militants in gaza keep unleashing rocket attacks on israel and get alarmingly close to jerusalem. a new provocation as they continue the ai

their take on the presidential election and they will weigh in on petraeus as well. >>> keep it on cnn for special coverage. remember, president obama holding a news conference at 1:00 p.m. eastern time. wolf blitzer will be all over this covering it for you. make sure you stay tuned. >>> listen to this, another major recall for toyota. it's recalling close to 3 million cars worldwide affecting mostly 2004 to 2009 prius models. 670,000 of them were sold in the united states. you have one, right, berman? the problem here, issues with the car's steering system and their electric water pumps. toyota says no crashes or injuries have been reported. that's good news. >>> and a shake-up at the long island utility company under fire for its slow response to super storm sandy. why is chief operating officer michael hervey is resigning at the end of this year. hervey has been the target of many angered residents left in the cold for over two weeks. he's been the target from andrew cuomo as well. >>> and this entrepreneur says he's in hiding this morning as police in belize try to solve a murder

. >>> "cnn newsroom" continues right now with deb feyerick. hey, deb. >> thanks so much, suzanne. i'm deborah feyerick in for brooke baldwin. and we begin with the escalating crisis in the middle east as violence rages between israel and militants in gaza. more casualties, more deaths, fatalities doubling over the last day. gaza's rocket strikes which hit israel's two largest cities, jerusalem and tel aviv, have brought a swift and powerful response. israel is focused on taking out hamas' iranian supplied rockets which can travel up to 45 miles, the farthest ever. hamas has been firing rockets for years as a way to end israel's blockade of supplies into gaza. terms of a potential cease-fire are being brokered by egypt, turkey and qatari officials. israeli defense forces targeted a media building in gaza, aiming at four senior hamas operatives they believed were inside. and two people died. it is not clear if they were the ones designated as the hamas targets. hamas, which grew out of the muslim brotherhood, seized in our gaza in 2007. since then, the group has become increasingly militarized.

a break the no tax pledge. that is a hopeful sign, folks, because a new cnn/orc poll shows more than two thirds of americans believe a trip over that cliff would create major problems, perhaps even a crisis. cnn political editor paul steinhauser is live from washington, d.c. this morning. nice to see you, paul. so the fiscal cliff triggers back-breaking tax hikes and massive spending cuts. you've got more numbers that show what type of budget plan americans actually prefer. >> exactly. one of the big arguments, zoraida, is should it be all spending cuts to get us there or tax increases, as well? brand-new numbers just out from cnn/orc. only about one in three say whatever deal should be struck should be just spending cuts. but almost seven in ten, two thirds of americans say the plan should include spending cuts and tax increases. our poll indicates americans are not so optimistic a deal will get done and if it doesn't get done, who gets the blame? look at this right here, about 45% say republicans in congress will be blamed if there is no deal and the country falls off the fiscal cliff.

the megamillionaire is not a suspect, they want to question him and his response has been bizarre. cnn's martin savidge is in belize with details on a case involving young women, poisoned dogs and bad blood. >> i'm sitting in john mcafee's front yard. i can sit here because this is actually the beach and here in belize, the beach is considered public property. the house back there, the purple and yellow, the lights are on, but nobody's home. it's also in this spot that yesterday, i had an interesting conversation with a young woman who claims to be one of seven of mcafee's lovers. tiffany as she called herself, didn't want to be seen. like mcafee, she fears the police. when was the last time you saw him? >> sunday. around 11:15. >> do you know where he is now? >> no. >> now, a day later, tiffany's gone, too. the only residents left are dogs. and dogs may play a central role in this murder mystery. officials say they're barking and aggressive behavior was a frequent source of friction between mcafee and his neighbor, greg fall, who lived here. last friday, mcafee told police someone poisoned fou

so many calls for you to come back. i hope that you will. carol costello has your cnn newsroom. >> don is a generous guy. i admire that. >> i think he's making it up. >> have a great weekend. >>> stories we're watching right now in the newsroom, they are the elite of the elite. the best of the best. now several members of s.e.a.l. team six are in deep trouble. and it's all because of a video game. >>> plus this -- >> waiting in line here, 8 1/2 hours, is not fun. >> you heard it. eight hours for gas. we'll take you inside the plan to get the east coast gas shortage under control. >>> and in florida, election 2012 is not over yet. the rest of the country has moved on, but once again, florida just can't seem to get it together. got the munchies, colorado? quarterback peyton manning may be able to cure those off-the-field cravings. "newsroom" strt starts right n. >>> and good morning. happy, happy friday to you. i'm carol costello. we peer over the nation's so-called fiscal cliff. it's a term you'll be hearing a lot more of. we're just 53 days from a series of extreme tax hikes a

's a nonstarter. clearly, a lot of work to do. cnn's jill doherty is following developments. she's in our washington bureau. jill, the president said he'd like to put up a bill right away to extend tax cuts for families earning less than $250,000. that doesn't seem like it'll be a go for john boehner, does it? >> no, at least at this point it doesn't. after all, the republicans want those tax cuts to continue. that's really the nub of it. how far they'll go, it's a very important meeting. this is really it. this is where the president weighs in. it's mano a mano. the person who's taking a harder stance is mitch mcconnell. let's listen to what he says from the senate side. >> we don't happen to think the government needs more revenue. the government spends too much as it is. if democrats are willing to reduce spending and strengthen entitlement programs, which we all know are on an unsustainable path that threatens our own long-term viability and the economic well-being of our children and grandchildren, then we'll be there. what we won't do is raise tax rates. >> okay. so read the fine pr

and singer dionne warwick. >> great show. meanwhile, cnn "newsroom" with carol costello begins right now. >>> tear gas in cairo near the u.s. embassy as the fight for democracy goes on. >> face to face. susan rice and john mccain, the man who wanted watergate style hearings, meet. and only cnn catches up with mccain before the big meeting. >> what do you have to learn today from miss rice? >> whatever ambassador rice wants to tell me. she's the one who asked for the meeting. i didn't. >> wouldn't you like to be a fly on the wall? >>> spyfall, real-life bond movie. yasser arafat's body was exhumed. was the palestinian leader po h poisoned by israeli spies? >>> plus this. >> you said walden is in trouble. >> i'm the trouble walden has been in, repeatedly. >> he calls it filth, the half in "two and a half men" begs you not to watch his show. "newsroom" starts now. >>> good morning to you. thank you so much for being with us. i'm carol costello. we begin with a high stakes meeting just minutes from now. this hour, the u.s. ambassador to the united nations will muster all of her diplomatic s

with us online here. you can follow us on cnn weather on twitter. we'll give you all the latest information. >>> president obama back at the white house. it wasn't the welcome that his staff had intended. they wanted to greet him on the south lawn. but the bad weather changed those plans. the first family took air force one then arrived at the white house by motorcade instead. >> the president's first order of business, avoiding the fiscal cliff. congressional leaders from both parties conceding the election with a call to compromise. what that comprise is, that hasn't been ironed out. w we'll get to what they said. >> the presidential vase over except in florida. the electoral votes are i will stun claimed. they're not make or break this time. president obama still holds a lead there. >> seven house races still up for grabs this morning across the country including the heated contest on florida's treasure coast between tea party republican allen west and democratic challenger patrick murphy. right now murphy does have a very slim lead of less than 2500 votes. but west not conce

. cnn's barbara starr is following that story from the pentagon. good morning. >> good morning, soledad. well, look, at least at this point, there's no indication publicly of a national security breach. but that doesn't mean the questions aren't growing. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are questioning the timing behind the revelation. house majority leader eric cantor said an fbi employee told him in october about the petraeus affair. by that time an fbi investigation was already under way. the fbi told the director of national intelligence james clapper on election night, according to a senior u.s. intelligence official. the white house says it was notified the day after the election, and the president the following day. that doesn't make sense to house homeland security chairman peter king. >> this seems to have been going on for several months yet now it appears they're saying that the fbi didn't realize until election day that general petraeus was involved. it just doesn't add up. >> "the new york times" reports the fbi actually started its investigation late this summer. the h

and started moving some of them to the hardest-hit areas of new york and new jersey. cnn administrator craig fugate says it's not clear yet what the total demand will be. >> and while the region recovers from sandy, for many people, those who lost everything in the storm, this doesn't feel like much of a recovery to them. cnn's susan candiotti is live in asbury park, new jersey this morning. we underznd stand that you have one family's story. >> that's right. you know, as you mentioned, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people in new jersey remain without power. and a lot of those people live in coastal areas, where people still are not allowed to go back home, because they have no power. but for a few hours a day, a few are able to go back and are being allowed to start the cleanup. we made an emotional return with one couple to a place called pelican island, new jersey. with sandy's storm clouds gathering, sue evacuated. but over her objections, husband bill stayed behind. it was traumatizing. >> rode out the storm until friday morning. friday morning i said i couldn't take any m

candidate, the miami herald says it's obama. cnn white house correspondent brianna keilar's been keeping track of what the president's been doing since his victory speech early this morning. brianna, the president should be landing back in washington very soon taking marine one over to the white house. he's got a full agenda ready i assume. >> reporter: he does. and i will tell you, wolf, the white house is keeping it under wraps as far as what happens after he arrives at the white house. but we know he'll land obviously at andrews air force base. we're expecting that not too long after 5:00 eastern. and then he'll come here to the white house landing on the south lawn in marine one. the first time he's been back to the white house knowing that he'll be here for another four years. this morning he did wake up in chicago as we await for him to leave chicago he called con gregs gnat leaders, democrats and republicans in both the house and senate before making his way to the airport stopped by his campaign headquarters to meet with hundreds of volunteers and staff members and really thank t

"starting point" begins right now. and good morning our "starting point" this morning, the u.s. is just 53 days to falling off that fiscal cliff. today, president obama is going to deliver a big speech about the economy. one of the main components of the president's spending plan is higher tax rates for the wealthy. that's something that house speaker john boehner doesn't seem to be buying. listen. >> raising tax rates is unacceptable. and, frankly, it couldn't even pass the house. i'm not sure it could pass the senate. >> without a budget compromise, drastic cuts amendmently kick in. that, of course, could send the economy spiraling back into a recession. white house correspondent brianna keilar is live for us this morning from washington. john boehner was the guy who said he didn't think a lame duck congress could do big things. what can be done in the next, what did

, they said, with the ambassador's explanation for her comments following the benghazi consulate attack. cnn foreign affairs reporter elise labott has more details for us. she's in washington, d.c. this morning. elise, good morning. >> hey, soledad. well, what came out in those meetings and why senators say they're even more concerned, centers around the information that the cia had just after the attack about possible involvement in the benghazi attack that killed ambassador chris stevens and those three other americans. now, ambassador rice did not make reference to this information in her talk show appearances. the unclassified talking points she used were provided by the cia, were stripped of these references to al qaeda, because the information was classified and couldn't be delivered in public. now, after the meeting, ambassador rice acknowledged those talking points turned out to be incorrect. but that she stressed she and the administration never meant to mislead the american people. and what the senators are saying is, as a cabinet member, ambassador rice is privy to this conflictin

of the director of national intelligence tells cnn that the talking points were changed by the intelligence community. now, congress has launched an investigation after former director david petraeus testified he knew immediately after the september 11th attack in libya that the attack was carried out by terrorists linked to al-qaeda. now, this of course contradicts what we heard from u.s. ambassador to the united nations who said publicly on five sunday talk shows that the attack was spontaneous and sparked by an antimuslim film. the director of the national intelligence office says substantial changes were made before those talking points were sent. but the question still remains who made the changes an why and did anyone in the white house know the full unedited version of events which included that link to al-qaeda? tonight, the state department has no comment, neither does the cia. johnny isaacson is "outfront" tonight. thanks very much for taking the time. as we can report, this is late r reporting here that we have tonight, but the bell jensen community is saying look, we made the ch

intelligence committee wants to be briefed both by petraeus and his replacement, michael morrell. cnn's jill dougherty is at the state department digging into some of this really confusing web i think it's fair to say. good morning to you, jill. >> hey, soledad. you know, let's begin with that honorary consul general. in tampa, apparently, from what we can understand, jill kelley was totally a volunteer. she was a volunteer with an international organization that greets international visitors, and then also, in some capacity, she was helping to promote a trade agreement with south korea. at least that is the understanding. and in that capacity, the south korean government, according to yonhap news agency, which is the official south korean news agency, they gave her an honorary consul appointment. it has no legal standing. it is not a diplomatic post. it is totally voluntary. and has no rights. so when she is saying there, you know, my property is inviolable, it would appear at this stage to be, let's say, a gross exaggeration of what's going on. but that doesn't mean that she didn't have co

of the storm victims as well. cnn's victor blackwell is live for us in staten island. what are the expectations of what the president will do today? what's kind of his plan? >> reporter: well, it's two-fold, he's going to fulfill the role of comforter in chief and speak with the people who lost their livelihood. like this business behind me, this tech company, the businesses are completely devastated by this storm, but this is the scene in homes and businesses all over staten island. he'll talk with people who lost someone or know of neighbors who lost someone. of the 43 deaths here in new york, more than half of them are in staten island. also, he's here to view the recovery. you can probably hear in the background that the power tools are working right now. as soon as the sun came up, crews were back out, working. and that's what dominick traynham wants to hear more of. he moved to this area of newdorf on staten island when he was 13. it was 1959. four years later, he got married and bought a house up the road. now, both houses are destroyed by this storm, and i asked him what he did when he
